Stuff Seen, March 2014

The War Game (Peter Watkins, 1965) [8]
Targets (Peter Bogdanovich, 1968) [7+]
Inside Llewyn Davis (Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, 2013) [8]
Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón, 2013) [6.5] [a remarkable visual accomplishment, but it’s so painstakingly planned, in its mainstream-targeted emotional manipulation and in its coercion of the spectators’ gaze, that it ends up being too artifical, lacking creativity and soul]
Cypher (Vincenzo Natali, 2002) [7.5] [a low budget, old school and highly creative sci-fi film that looks and sounds like an episode from The Twilight Zone, but upgraded by stylistic mastery touches in the vein of Carpenter and Gordon]
Timecrimes (Nacho Vigalondo, 2007) [7]
Hellsing Ultimate, ep.8 (2011)
Pika Don (1978) [short]
Flesh (Paul Morrissey, 1968) [6]
To the Wonder (Terrence Malick, 2012) [6.5] [I really wanted to rate this one higher, but… the first letdown in Malick’s superb career]
True Detective, s1 ep.1 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [7.5]
True Detective, s1 ep.2 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [7]
True Detective, s1 ep.3 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [7.5]
True Detective, s1 ep.4 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [8]
True Detective, s1 ep.5 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [8]
True Detective, s1 ep.6 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [7]
True Detective, s1 ep.7 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [7]
True Detective, s1 ep.8 (Cary Fukunaga, 2014) [6]
Hannibal, s1 ep.1 (David Slade, 2013) [6.5]
Hannibal, s1 ep.2 (Michael Rymer, 2013) [6.5]
Her (Spike Jonze, 2013) [7.5]
Legend (Ridley Scott, 1985) [6]
A Time to Kill (Joel Schumacher, 1996) [5]
Frailty (Bill Paxton, 2001) [6]
The Ice Harvest (Harold Ramis, 2005) [6]
The Kings of Summer (Jordan Vogt-Roberts, 2013) [6.5-]
Snowpiercer (Joon-ho Bong, 2013) [5] [another case of a film praised by critics (probably the same critics who regularly bash USA blockbusters that are not very different from it) just because of its director’s name, its international production, and its class warfare left-wing elements; even if there’s something interesting in the first half, it all rapidly worsens, ending with some very bad 20-30 final minutes. “Pacific Rim”, with all its flaws, is clearly a better looking, better shot and more engaging film. The great “Salinui chueok” remains Joon-ho Bong’s career peak so far and it was in a totally different league.]
Sinister (Scott Derrickson, 2012) [6.5+]
The Conjuring (James Wan, 2013) [6.5]
Castle Keep (Sydney Pollack, 1969) [7]
Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969) [7.5]
Like Someone in Love (Abbas Kiarostami, 2012) [6.5]
