Stuff Seen, June 2014

Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) [7.5]
American Hustle (David O. Russell, 2013) [6.5]
Emperor of the North Pole (Robert Aldrich, 1973) [7.5]
Shampoo (Hal Ashby, 1975) [7.5]
The Stepford Wives (Bryan Forbes, 1975) [7.5]
Only God Forgives (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2013) [5] [another “Valhalla Rising” for Refn: a stylish direction at the service of a mediocre script]
Marathon Man (John Schlesinger, 1976) [7-]
The Bad News Bears (Michael Ritchie, 1976) [8] [a truly critically underrated gem]
The Omen (Richard Donner, 1976) [7]
3 Women (Robert Altman, 1977) [9]
The Last Tycoon (Elia Kazan, 1976) [6.5]
Trilogy of Terror (Dan Curtis, 1975) [6]
Killer of Sheep (Charles Burnett, 1977) [7]
Electra Glide in Blue (James William Guercio, 1973) [7.5]
Walkabout (Nicolas Roeg, 1971) [7.5]
The Last Wave (Peter Weir, 1977) [7]
The Parallax View (Alan J. Pakula, 1974) [7]
La Vénus à la fourrure (Roman Polanski, 2013) [7]
Joe (David Gordon Green, 2013) [7.5]
Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg, 2013) [7.5]
The Counselor (Ridley Scott, 2013) [6.5]
Side Effects (Steven Soderbergh, 2013) [7]
Trance (Danny Boyle, 2013) [5-] [how is it possible to take this involuntarily ridiculous movie seriously? the script is neither dreamy nor trancey, just drunk. lowest point in Boyle’s filmography so far]
Big Bad Wolves (Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado, 2013) [5]
Enough Said (Nicole Holofcener, 2013) [7]
About Time (Richard Curtis, 2013) [7]
Vamps (Amy Heckerling, 2012) [7] [an underrated one. if you can neglect the poor special effects and some bad moments, there’s not only good dark humor and quirky fun, but also substance – a reflection on aging, mortality and historical consciousness – under its surface]
The Five-Year Engagement (Nicholas Stoller, 2012) [6.5]
The Internship (Shawn Levy, 2013) [5]
This Is 40 (Judd Apatow, 2012) [5] [totally uninteresting. first fail in Apatow’s career so far]
Ida (Pawel Pawlikowski, 2013) [7]
Jagten (Thomas Vinterberg, 2012) [7-] [I’d like to give this one a 7.5, since its moral stance is one of absolute relevance, but the unrealistically irrational behavior of almost every character is an immature over-the-top way to sensationalise the story and underline too heavily a victimization of the protagonist; Mikkelsen’s brilliant performance should’ve deserved a more pondered script]
All the Light in the Sky (Joe Swanberg, 2012) [6.5]
Quiet City (Aaron Katz, 2007) [6.5]
Capricorn One (Peter Hyams, 1977) [7]
Looking for Mr. Goodbar (Richard Brooks, 1977) [6.5]
